Sports-themed video games such as FIFA and eFootball have been key catalysts for this expansion, attracting both participants and spectators, and resulting in a surge in esports wagering, particularly during the COVID-19 outbreak.
While the attraction of live football remains indisputable for many, China stands out with a notable 50% of supporters finding simulated matches equally captivating. This implies a greater receptiveness to the immersive and competitive nature of esports among Chinese enthusiasts.
France trails China with a respectable 36% of supporters embracing competitive gaming. However, the general sentiment in Europe’s most prominent leagues is more restrained, with only 29.2% identifying as esports aficionados. The study also emphasized the substantial interest in esports within China and the United States. A remarkable 84% of Chinese enthusiasts voiced their support for esports, with the US slightly behind at 66%. Among Europe’s top five leagues, Spain reigns supreme with the largest proportion of esports aficionados, a staggering 58% of Spaniards actively participate in competitive gaming.
